Howden Heritage Weekend has obtained a highly-commended award after being shortlisted in the Rural Action category of The Dalesman second annual Yorkshire Rural Awards 2008.

Dr Bernard and Mrs Ann Nield represented the group at a gala dinner hosted by Gervase Phinn, author and raconteur, on Thursday, May 23 at the Pavilions, Harrogate.

Dr Nield said: "We are grateful for the chance to represent the weekend at such a prestigious and interesting event.

"We are conscious that the weekend has involved many volunteers from throughout the community and the award is due recognition of their efforts."

The eighteen entries in the six categories were drawn from a wide range of rural activities including small business entrepreneurs, restoration projects and green businesses. The main award for Rural Action went to the founder of a school gardening club that now supplies produce for the school dinners.

The finale of the evening was the presentation of the Yorkshireman of the Year Award to Peter Walker, author of the 'Constable' books which provide the basis for the ITV series, Heartbeat, and a Life Achievement Award to Sir Ken Morrison.
