Goole Rotary Club members are doing their bit for the Burma cyclone disaster by raising money to send essential survival equipment to the stricken country.

Shelterbox, one of the Rotary's official charities, provides emergency aid for victims of natural disasters. They send out tough, green plastic boxes containing a ten-person tent and ancillary equipment designed to enable a family of up to ten people to survive for at least six months. The tents are suitable for a wide range of conditions and other items included in the box may include insulated ground sheets, thermal blankets, a multi-fuel stove, cooking equipment, tools, mosquito nets; the plastic tub also doubles up as a water container. Each box costs £490.

Bob Haigh, Rotary Club member and organiser of the Burma collections, said: "People who need aid in Burma aren't getting it. We chose Burma because China is much better organised with their aid.

"Shelterbox were the first to acquire visas and get aid into Burma. One of the Shelterbox people out there is also a fireman and he contacted the Burmese firemen and helped train them to put the tents up.

"We chose Shelterbox because we, as a Rotary Club, know that the money we give is going to an organisation we can trust. Shelterbox is already up and running and it is there and it is working.

"We have been working with Shelterbox for four or five years and we review it every year. If a disaster crops up we try and do something."

Donations will be collected in Goole town centre on Friday and Saturday by Rotary members. Donations will also be collected at the Goole Times offices and anonymous donations may also be sent to Bob Haigh, organiser, at 148 Hook Road, Goole, DN14 5JZ. He can be contacted on 01405 763896.
