M and J Harker Construction of Goole have showed their support and offered to sponsor the Goole Gift Campaign for Heroes dinner-dance event in August.

The dinner-dance and celebrity auction will be held at the Vikings Hotel on August 29 as part of the Goole-based campaign to send welfare boxes to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Campaign co-founder Darren Smith, said: "It's a great boost to the campaign that M and J Harker have been kind enough to help us carry the financial burden of arranging such an event, it means that even more money can be spent on the important task of supporting our brave men and women in those two terrible locations, we cannot thank them enough. They are a credit to the town and indeed the country."

Matt Harker, commercial director of M and J Harker, which is based on Lower Bridge Street, said: "M and J Harker Construction is pleased to be associated and sponsor such a worthwhile cause. When we heard about the campaign we felt compelled to assist in any way possible and just hope our small contribution will demonstrate to our troops in conflict that the majority of the British people are behind them and are grateful for the service they provide."

The campaign also recently received yet another message of support, this time from a member of the royal family.

In a letter from Captain James Todd of the Royal Marines, the Equerry from HRH Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, he said: "The Duke of York wishes you every continued success in your endeavours, in support of the Goole Gift Campaign for Heroes, a worthy and honourable cause."

Co-founder Kerry Smith said: "It's a great feeling when you receive a message like this but nothing can compare to the messages we receive from the front lines thanking not just us but all the supporters of the campaign, without whom we would not be able to continue. After all, we are just the 'middlemen' in all this. It's the people who support us and the people who receive the boxes who are the important ones and we thank them both.

"I am amazed at the amount of support we have been given in respect of auction prizes for the 'Night Fit For Heroes' and this week we have received three gifts, including a day with the Royal Tank Regiment on Salisbury Plain, which I believe will include seeing a fire-power demonstration!

"Arsenal Football Club have also sent an item of signed memorabilia - the list goes on. I think we have gifts for everyone's tastes and we hope to make a lot of money so we can give the troops the support they deserve."

Tickets are still available for this event but are going fast. Anyone wishing to buy tickets can do so either by getting a flyer from the Vikings Hotel, or by ringing Darren or Kerry on 01405 704893. The campaign is still looking for local companies to help with the event in any way they can all be it a cash donation or by donating an auction lot or raffle prize.

Anyone interested can contact the campaign on the same number and the same applies to anyone who wants to help with the campaign.

Darren said: "We are always looking for people to help with the campaign. After all, the more people out there actively promoting the campaign, the more support we will get for our troops. So if you can give a few moments of your time to maybe arrange a collection of items to send at your work or school or sell raffle tickets to promote the campaign, please contact us."
