Biomass scheme launched at Drax
Drax power station has launched a £50 million project which aims to replace 10 per cent of the coal it uses with biomass.
Bosses say the new power plant, which will produce electricity by burning coal along with materials such as wood chips, sunflower husks or grasses, will help reduce carbon emissions by up to 15 per cent by 20011.
Drax executives signed a deal with French technology firm Alstom to build the new processing plant, which is expected to prepare 1.5m tones of biomass per year. The biomass would be ground into a fine powder and injected directly into the power station's coal-fired furnaces
Work on the project, which at 400MW is believed to be the largest biomass co-firing project in the world, is to begin immediately.
Dorothy Thompson, chief executive of Drax, said: "At Drax, we are only too well aware of the need to tackle climate change and we firmly believe that we are part of the solution. We have a role to play in the transition towards a low carbon economy whilst delivering reliable supplies of electricity."
Drax is the UK's largest electricity generator, producing up to 7 per cent of the country's demand and is one of the UK's largest emitters of greenhouse gases.
The project will be the first major contract for the two energy giants.
Patrick Fragman, managing director at Alstom, said: "Alstom recognises Drax Power Ltd's long-term commitment to their continual reduction of CO2 and are very proud to be associated with the largest biomass co-firing project in the world.
"This contract underpins Alstom's position as world leader in delivering biomass co-firing solutions worldwide to contribute to the fight against climate change, in line with its clean-power strategy."
