An old but dilapidated bandstand could be in line for a renovation - but only if sponsors can be found.

The West Park bandstand in Goole has been in decline in recent years and its best years are clearly behind it.

But conservationists - and some town councillors - believe it can be restored with a lick of paint, a bit of elbow grease - and pots of cash.

The appeal has now gone out for sponsors to rescue the old bandstand and give it a much-needed facelift to restore it to its former pomp.

Goole resident and local conservationist Gary Widdowson, a painter and decorator, has even offered to carry out work on the outdoor concert stage free of charge.

He made his offer at the Annual General Meeting of Goole Town Council on Monday, when he called on councillors to try to find sponsors needed to pay for the repair job.

Mr Widdowson said: "I'd like to see it used for concerts again, just like the one in Riverside Park.

"It's repairable but in two or three years' time it's going to be dangerous."

In its heyday brass bands used to play at the bandstand as crowds of people wandered through the park, but now tiles are falling off its roof and the concrete floor is subsiding.

Cllr Jean Kitchen told Mr Widdowson that to restore the bandstand would cost in the region of £10,000.

She added that, although she would like to see the bandstand restored, Goole Town Council "hasn't any spare money for it".

Cllr Pat O'Neil called for a West Park friends' group to be set up to look into ways of improving the park, including the bandstand.

Anyone wishing to sponsor the restoration of the bandstand can call Cllr Jean Kitchen on 01405 762389.
