Readers are being warned to be on their guard against conmen masquerading as Goole Times representatives.

The warning follows an incident at the Five Rivers sheltered accommodation in Goole, where two people - believed to be a man and a woman - asked one of the residents if she took our weekly newspaper. The elderly woman, who is 86, answered 'yes' and the two callers asked to be let in. But the woman, who suffers from hearing and memory problems, grew suspicious and refused to let them in.

This week the woman's daughter-in-law, who asked not to be named so as to protect her mother-in-law's identity, said other elderly and vulnerable residents could have been targeted by the bogus callers.

She said: "There was somebody pressing on the intercom asking her if she took the Goole Times. She said 'Yes, I've always taken the Goole Times.' They then asked if they could come in and talk to her. Her memory is struggling a little but she presumes she said 'No' and said she didn't let them in. She thinks it was a man and a woman - they appeared to have been taking the Goole Times name in vain."

The woman said she feared other elderly people might fall prey to the conmen. "The people there are quite old and vulnerable," she added. "It's a bit mean, to say the least."

The elderly woman thinks the incident happened last Thursday or Friday. "She was very, very frightened," said her daughter-in-law.

Anyone else who has experienced a bogus call of this nature, or knows of someone who has been targeted, should call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.
