Two teenage boys died after a suspicious fire that ripped through a garage in Holme on Spalding Moor in the early hours of Saturday.

Best friends Daniel Allan and Ryan Steels, both 14 and both from Holme, were trapped in the garage blaze at an empty property on Chestnut Drive in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It is believed that the pair had been camping in nearby Sober Hill and had gone for shelter in the garage when they became cold and were unable to wake Daniel's mum, who lives in the house next door.

The fire brigade was called at 4.13am and police were called shortly after.

Daniel, who also lived in the house next door with his mother Michelle, sister Bethany, 13 and brother Kieran, 10, died in the flames. Ryan, of Baileywood Lane, lost his fight for life on Monday morning at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool after suffering serious injuries.

It is believed that Ryan was living with Daniel's family temporarily after a chip pan fire at his own home.

Two people were arrested on Saturday in relation to the fire and have been released on bail until July pending further inquiries.

Grieving pupils at Market Weighton School where the boys attended were told about the tragedy in a special assembly this week. A book of condolence has been opened at the school.

Detectives are now trying to piece together information to find out whether the blaze was an accident of the result of arsonists.

Detective Chief Inspector, Mark Oliver, said: "We need to know what Daniel and Ryan were doing on Friday evening and Saturday morning up to 4am.

"We also need to know if they were with anyone else."

He also stated that youngsters with information should not be concerned if they were drinking in public places and should contact police to help them discover why the two boys lost their lives.

Dozens of floral tributes have been left at the scene of the fire from friends, family and local businesses.

Police are appealing for information about the boys' movements on Friday evening and during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Daniel was wearing white trainers, dark blue tracksuit bottoms with a white or red line down the side and a cream hooded top with a brown or rust coloured horizontal pinstripe running through it.

Ryan was wearing white trainers, black jogging bottoms, a light-coloured hooded top with light grey and white stripes and a Manchester United top.

Information can be sent to the police via text message to 07875545908.

It is hoped that the text message number will appeal to young people who may have valuable information.

People with information can also contact police on 0845 6060 222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
