A woman who suffers from breast cancer has shaved her hair off to raise awareness about the disease.

Jennifer Hague (54) wants to raise money for Macmillan Nurses - a charity which provides vital support and advice for cancer sufferers - before she loses her hair during chemotherapy.

She decided on a sponsored head-shave, which took place at the Top to Toe hair salon in Goole yesterday (Wednesday).

Mrs Hague said: "My hair is dropping out now, so I've only got a small window in which to get it off.

"I'm going to lose my hair anyway, so I might as well shave it off and raise awareness about this condition."

Mrs Hague said she wanted to do something quite drastic to highlight how quickly breast cancer can develop.

In November, 2006 the married mother-of-two was diagnosed with the disease and had to go through chemotherapy, followed by a mastectomy in May, 2007 to have a breast removed. This was followed by a course of radium to cure the cancer.

"It was absolutely fine, then this year I noticed a difference again in the other breast," she said. "It was back again. I was surprised because I'd had mammograms."

The cancer had developed in Mrs Hague's breast in between breast-screening, which she had had at regular intervals.

"I now want other people to be aware that things can change and change quickly," she said.

Mrs Hague is now having chemotherapy again and will soon have a second mastectomy.

She will be donating the money form the sponsored head-shave to Macmillan Nurses and Yorkshire Cancer Research.

"Both of them have been a big help to me," said Mrs Hague. "The Marie Curie nurses are always at the other end of the telephone when you need them for advice and support. They're a huge back-up to the doctors and give you good advice."

The money will be split between the two charities. Anyone wishing to sponsor Mrs Hague can call her on: 01405 762 385. Donations can be sent to Jennifer Hague, 39 Marshfield Avenue, Goole, DN14 5JJ.
