Councillors in Snaith are calling on police to put a halt to the cycling menace in Snaith.

Snaith and Cowick Town Council wants local police officer Pc Janet Anderson to call a meeting with school heads to stop youngsters riding on pavements.

Town mayor Councillor Frank Townshend, who has warned in the past that a serious accident was on the cards if children did not stop cycling on pavements, told a council meeting last week that the only option left was for the council to raise the matter at local schools. He called on the council to seek advice from police on arranging a meeting with school heads so councillors could speak to the children themselves.

"It might be better coming from the children," he added.

Councillors agreed to go along with the motion.

Meanwhile, the council is also writing to police to ask for help in stopping vandals smashing beer bottles around the town.

Matters came to a head in April when vandals left broken glass strewn across a children's play area next to Snaith Primary School.

The park, on Bourn Mill Balk Road, had to be closed for a day to prevent youngsters injuring themselves on the broken glass.

Since then vandals have been littering other areas of the town with shards of glass, mainly from alcohol bottles.

The meeting was told that vandals had now turned their attention to Priory Lane in Snaith town centre and the electricity sub-station on Gowdall Lane.

Town clerk Cath Hird told councillors the sub-station had become a magnet for under-age drinkers and that the matter had been reported to Police Community Support Officer Michelle Greenfield.

Police have since been down to the sub-station and confiscated bottles from youngsters.

The meeting was also told that kids had been sleeping rough near the sub-station.

Councillors voted to write to police chiefs in Goole to ask for extra police and PCSO patrols in the area to curb vandalism and under-age drinking.
