Award victory for Jug and Bottle
Following last year's success, when it won 'best shop' for Yorkshire and Humberside in the Observer Food Monthly's fourth annual food awards, The Jug and Bottle in Bubwith is already celebrating again.
The specialist delicatessen and off-licence was runner up in the 'community off-licence of the year' category at the National Drinks Retailing Awards.
The awards are the most widely anticipated and rigorously judged competition in the trades' calendar and culminated in a five-star ceremony at London's famous Dorchester Hotel.
The Jug and Bottle, situated on Bubwith's Main Street, is owned by husband and wife Doug and Louise Smith and run by Louise.
Louise said: "This is one of the most respected competitions for all drink retailers, including supermarkets, wholesalers, chains and independents. Whilst we didn't actually come away with the top prize this year, it has helped to put our Bubwith shop on the map and we hope to go one better next year."
In September 2007, five years after reopening the original shop, they moved into the renovated old village school in the heart of the village. This followed the completion of an eighteen-month restoration and refurbishment programme which started in the spring of 2006.
They were, therefore, delighted with the news that they are one of three finalists in the chairman's award for enhancing the built heritage of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 6.
Doug added: "We're thrilled to have been short-listed. We have put everything into this project, whilst continuing to run the business and we are very proud of the outcome.
"We've even had several customers who have pointed out where they used to sit in the old infants' classroom that now forms the main area of the shop. We feel that we have returned the building to its former glory and that it is now a focal point for the people of Bubwith."
