Cash boost for town's Hinge
The Hinge Day Centre in Goole, which provides advice and support to vulnerable young people, has been given a cash boost by the town's Co-operative businesses.
A grant of almost £6,700 from the Co-operative Foundation, the grant-giving arm of the business, was presented to the group last week.
Co-operative group members also helped redecorate the centre's interior and hosted a special 'Taste of the Orient' celebration day, during which centre staff demonstrated Chinese cooking techniques.
The grant will enable the Carlisle Street centre to continue offering a range of advice and support services to help vulnerable young people between the ages of 16 and 25 to find jobs and homes.
The cash bost couldn't have come at a better time for the centre, which is still waiting to hear whether its bid for yearly funding from the town council has been successful.
Sarah Robinson, charity manager at the Co-operative Foundation, said: "We are delighted to have supported this valuable community project, which makes a difference to the local community and reflects our co-operative values."
The Co-operative Travel branch on Boothferry Road gave its support by redecorating the centre's toilet and shower room.
The travel team also held a 'Taste of the Orient' party last Friday, April 25, for young learners.
This included oriental-themed activities and a cookery demonstration, with food donated by The Co-operative Food store in Howden.
Alana Mills, manager of Co-operative Travel on Boothferry Road, said: "We organised the oriental day to mark the end of the redecoration work and give the young people a bit of a party. The buffet food was donated by our food store in Howden and we decorated the centre with Chinese lanterns."
Last month Goole Town Council's Policy and Resources Committe voted to delay a decision on how much it would give in grant-aid to four bidding community groups in Goole, including the Hinge Day Centre.
The Hinge has bid for £5,000 for this financial year to help in its continued revival following the difficulties it had experienced in 2007.
Becky Challenger, the centre's Youth and Social Inclusion Support Worker, said the grant from the Co-operative group would help plug the gap.
"We are really grateful to the Co-operative Foundation," she added. "Their contribution is helping us to assist vulnerable young people in the local community to move forward."
