Police are planning to send out high-visibility patrols to put an end to the parking chaos outside Gilberdyke Primary School.

They are also planning to issue fixed-penalty fines to anyone parked illegally outside the school at school opening and closing times.

Police Community Support Officer Simon Smith - who is delivering hundreds of leaflets informing residents what police plan to do about the problems on Clementhorpe Lane and Scalby Lane - said the neighbourhood police team in Howdenshire had decided that action was needed after complaints from residents.

"It's chaos, particularly at school times," he added. "Residents asked me to do something to sort it out and we're now looking at fixed penalty notices and high-visibility policing outside the school. We'll be sending out letters to residents letting them know what we plan to do."

Gilberdyke Primary head Martin Alger said he would support the police plans because they would tie in with the school's own green travel plan.

He added: "This new initiative is just the job for us. Whatever the PCSOs suggest we would support it if it makes things safer for the pupils.

"There is such a lot parking outside the school and it makes it dangerous. We get quite a lot of double-parking and it means the kids can't ride their bikes safely."

Mr Alger said the school was hoping to come to an arrangement with Gilberdyke Village Hall whereby parents could park in the hall's car park 200 yards from the school and then walk the short distance to drop their children off.

"There is a really big car park there which we want people to use as a drop-off point," he added. "If people could park there it would mean that they wouldn't have to park on the road, which is really the crux of the problem."
