Howden councillor Mark Preston has resigned from the Tory whip on the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The Conservative councillor made the stance in protest at the Conservatives' support for the fire cuts in Goole.

It means he will no longer be part of the Tory group in the council chamber but will remain as an independent ward councillor.

Cllr Preston said this week that he had the support of Howden's Tory MP and Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, as well as the national Conservative party, of which he was still a member.

It is understood East Riding Tory group leader Cllr Stephen Parnaby took action against Cllr Preston after he voted against the party whip on the fire cuts, following a proposal by the Fire Brigade to downgrade Goole Fire Station from two full-time crews to one full-time and one retained.

Clr Preston said: "I've resigned from the whip of the Tory group but I will stand as an independent. It means I will no longer be under the whip of the Tory group."

He added: "I still have the support of David Davis and the national group, as well as my local constituency, who have supported me in my actions."
