Hair stylist Rhiann Almond has proved she is a cut above the rest after getting through to the regional final of a national makeover competition.

Rhiann, who works for The Team at Joanne Mahoney salon in Howden, is one of just 20 hair stylists from the north of England who made it into the top 20 in the regional heats of the Trend Vision Award 08 competition.

The 21-year-old was selected from 800 other stylists and now hopes to make it into the top four, which would see her progress to the national finals.

As part of her makeover task, Rhiann had to give model Nikita Alden a complete makeover using hair-styling, make-up and clothes.

Rhiann, who lives in Hook, had to choose from four different trends and opted for 'mineral splendour', an understated look.

Eighteen-year-old Nikita, from Newport, looked a million dollars after Rhiann had finished with her.

The model, who also works at Joanne Mahoney's, was pictured after the makeover and the resulting photo was chosen as one of the winners.

Rhiann, who has worked for the Howden salon for the past five years, said: "I'm delighted to reach the regional final and now I want to go on and win it."

The talented hairdresser, who is now a creative senior stylist, regularly attends academies in Newcastle, Manchester and London.

After getting through stage one, Rhiann - who appeared in the Hairdressers' Journal this week - will now compete in Phase 2 of Trend Vision.

The regional heat will take place at The Hilton hotel in Manchester on Tuesday, May 27.

Joanne Mahoney, owner of The Team at Joanne Mahoney, said: "Rhiann has worked with us since she was 16 and has always been a hard-working, loyal member of my team and I am extremely proud of her achievements."
