Goole Hospital has changed its visitor times and the number of visitors allowed per patient from today.

Visitors will now be allowed only between 2pm and 4pm and from 6.30pm to 8pm and will be limited to two visitors per patient. The same applies to all other hospitals operated by the Trust.

More than two visitors will be allowed only in special circumstances, as will visits outside the allocated times and then only with the permission of the ward manager, nurse or midwife.

Director of nursing Peter Flood said there were two important reasons for the changes.

"Firstly, a constant flow of visitors can be extremely tiring for patients, who - apart from expectant and new mothers - it is important to remember are already ill and therefore prone to tiredness more quickly. It can also interfere with the care and treatment offered to a patient.

"Secondly, the more people that come onto the ward the greater the chance of infection. Patients are more likely to have reduced immune systems and therefore are more likely to pick these up."

Leaflets outlining the changes in further detail will be available from the wards from today. The policy is also available on the trust website at www.nlg.nhs.uk

Visitors are also asked to observe the following guidelines:

* Adhere to the maximum numbers of visitors allowed. This is two visitors at the bedside at any time, unless special permission is granted by Ward Manager/Nurse or Midwife in Charge.

* Please note that if a clinical procedure needs to be undertaken in a ward area you may be asked to leave the ward temporarily. The clinical procedure may not be affecting the patient you are visiting, but may be in the same bay.

* Do not visit if you are unwell. Visitors should be free of any symptoms of vomiting or diarrhoea for 72 hours before coming to the ward. If you have a cough, a cold or other infections you should be symptom-free before coming to the wards.

* Use the hand rub provided as you enter and leave the ward

* When visiting a ward that is closed due to an outbreak, soap and water hand wash should be used.

* Wash and dry your hands after visiting the toilet.

* Do not sit on the bed or use the patients' toilets. Only use toilets designated for visitors. Ward staff will tell you where the public toilets can be found.

* Do not touch wounds or any devices such as drips or catheters.

* When visiting patients who are being nursed in isolation rooms, check with the nurse/midwife in charge about any precautions that need to be taken.

* Talk to the nurse/midwife in charge or ask to see the matron if you have any concerns about the cleanliness of the hospital environment.
