Sword threat after kissing man's girlfriend
A sword-wielding man threatened to bite his friend's nose off and kill his family after hearing he had kissed his girlfriend, a court heard.
Alan Oliver (23) flew into a rage after finding out his sweetheart had kissed Iain Havell when his back was turned.
The dire threats were made while a raging Mr Oliver wielded a samurai sword, Goole magistrates heard.
He warned Mr Havell that if he did not come out of his flat he would kill him and the rest of his family.
Mr Oliver, who had played a game of darts with Mr Havell and friends in the hours leading up to his outburst, appeared at Goole Magistrates' Court this week, where he pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour.
Julie Laverack-Glanville, prosecuting, said Mr Oliver, who was standing outside the Eastgate flats in Goole, had demanded that Mr Havell "turn his buzzer on' and said "I'm going to come in and do you". He then threatened to bite Mr Havell's "f***ing nose off".
Mrs Laverack-Glanville said Mr Oliver, who was holding the sword in his right hand, followed this up with a threat to kill Mr Havell and his family.
She added that Mr Havell recognised the sword because it used to be his before he gave it to Mr Oliver "as a thankyou".
"He [Mr Havell] was extremely scared," said Mrs Glanville. "He feared Mr Oliver would use the sword."
She said that as he shouted the threats, Mr Oliver banged hard on the windows at the entrance to the flats as Mr Havell shouted: "I'm not coming out."
Mrs Laverack-Glanville said Mr Oliver, who lives in the same block of flats, kept shouting threats even after Mr Havell threatened to call the police.
Police arrived and took Mr Oliver away for questioning. During a subsequent search of his flat police found two samurai swords; they found a pair of scissors in Mr Oliver's pocket.
While being quizzed by police Mr Oliver told then he had not been carrying the samurai at the time of the incident on April 16 this year. He claimed he kept the two swords only as ornaments.
Mr Oliver claimed the scissors were in his pocket because he had used them to open a packet of noodles and, being drunk, had put them in his trousers instead of the kitchen drawer.
He did, however, admit threatening to bite his friend's nose off.
Mr Havell later told police he did not feel safe living in the same block of flats as Mr Oliver and that he was scared to go out because "he will get me".
Mrs Laverack-Glanville said Mr Havell realised he was in trouble when, after the darts game, he heard people talking outside his flat and recognised Mr Oliver's voice.
He realised from the muffled voices that Mr Oliver had found out about him kissing his girlfriend.
Mr Oliver and his mates left but about half an hour later he heard Mr Oliver's voice booming: "Turn your buzzer on now!"
Mr Oliver, who has previous convictions for tampering with a vehicle and breaching a curfew order, had his case adjourned until May 7, when he will be sentenced at Beverley Magistrates' Court.
He was released on bail on the condition that he does not enter the section of flats where Mr Havell lives.
