Children were barred from a play park in Snaith after youths littered the area with smashed beer and wine bottles.

Town mayor Councillor Frank Townshend padlocked the gates last Thursday, April 17, to stop children going near the glass.

Cllr Townshend said: "It was appalling. There was broken glass all over the place.

"I've no doubt that it's been done by teenagers and I'm convinced they themselves would have played there when they were six or seven, so what kind of mentality are we dealing with here? They are just a bunch of morons."

Resident Ann Megson, a grandmother-of-14 who lives on South Parwkay, said: "There was glass everywhere. It was getting embedded in the foam rubber next to the play equipment where children play."

She added: "We have some really nice teenagers in Snaith but unfortunately we have a heck of a lot of the others as well.

"They go across with their bottles and they are smashing them in the park. These youngsters have probably got brothers and sisters who use that field.

"We do try to accommodate them all but to do something as damned mindless as smashing glass in such a place is just not on."

The play area, which is on Bourn Mill Balk Road next to Snaith Primary School, is used by lots of children every day of the week.

Mothers with young children often pop into the park on their way back from picking them up from school.

Mrs Megson, the wife of county councillor Gordon Megson, regularly takes her own grandchildren to the park.

She added: "There was no other choice but to padlock the gates for the children's safety."

The park was re-opened the following morning after a local sweeper cleared the area of glass.
