A Goole post box which was sealed up - preventing dozens of residents from sending mail on time - will not be relocated, Royal Mail has revealed.

Royal Mail's senior external relations manager Matt Silcock said: "Royal Mail do not plan to re-site the post box as they have surveyed the area and believe that there is adequate provision.

"There is a post box approximately 400 yards away from what was Westfield Avenue Post Office, plus there is the post box at Goole Post Office 0.4 miles away.

"Royal Mail's service level is to have a post box every 0.5 miles."

The Royal Mail spokesman said there was no alternative but to remove the post box following a request by the landowner.

Just over a month ago Royal Mail sealed up the box without prior warning.

Residents and councillors are furious with Royal Mail at its decision not to relocate the box and local businesses say they, too, have been affected because of delays in posting mail.

Cllr Jane Marsden said: "I just think it is ridiculous because those who used to use it will now have a long walk either way.

"It is illogical if postmen are coming down Pasture Road to collect the post from beyond Westfield Avenue."

Royal Mail made the decision not to relocate the box despite offers from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) to help in its relocation.

One local business, the newsagent Chappelows, even offered to relocate the box on land in front of its shop.
