Green light for festival
Police are set to overlook an alcohol ban in West Park to allow the inaugural Goole Festival to go ahead.
The music festival, which will feature a host of live tribute bands, will be held on August 16.
It's understood police and the East Riding of Yorkshire Council are prepared to overlook the park's booze ban on the night of the festival.
Fake Festivals, which is organising the festival together with the Goole Gift Campaign, intends to sell alcohol inside a marquee where the bands will play.
Goole Gift Campaign/Fake Festivals say they will be relying on alcohol sales to make a profit, nearly half of which will go to charity.
However, festival-goers will not be allowed to bring their own drinks and must stay inside the marquee if they are drinking.
Darren Smith, of the Goole Gift Campaign, said: "Festival-goers will only be able to drink inside the marquee and can't take their own alcohol inside.
"They will be searched as they go in and searched when they go out. It will be a family affair and there will be 10 qualified doormen on-site.
"We have also taken every measure possible to make sure that nobody living around the park wil be upset about it."
Mr Smith added: "The festival will showcase some of the best tribute bands in the world."
The organisers have asked the police and county council to temporarily lift the booze ban through powers the police have not to enforce a ban in a defined area for a defined period of time.
On Monday, Goole Town Council gave festival organisers permission to go ahead with the music event subject to Fake-Festivals/Goole Gift Campaign meeting the conditions of the relevant licences and getting police permission for the sale of alcohol on-site.
The council also agreed to waive its normal hire fee of £218.55 and give the organisers free use of the park.
Councillor Pat O'Neill said: "I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope it's a success because it's for a very good cause."
Forty per cent of the profits from the event - which will feature Coldplay, U2 and Greenday cover bands - will go towards the Goole Gift Campaign, which sends presents to British troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Inside the marquee there will be a 'garden space' with licensed bar, food stands, tables and chairs, and toilets. Drinks tokens will be sold from a booth inside the tent.
During the event - which will take place between 7pm and 11.30pm - the park will be surrounded by high barriers and stewarded by registered security guards.
To prevent noise problems for residents living nearby, the marquee will be located at the back of the park.
Car-parking spaces will be provided inside the park.
