And the winning number is... 86!

The very first draw of the Goole and District Lottery took place at 1pm yesterday.

Musician Frank Ella, from Swinefleet, was charged with pressing the button to start the computer draw.

"I was very pleased to be asked as the independent witness," said Frank. "I know it will help support worthwhile causes in the community."

When we went to press, the name of the winner was still top secret as they have yet to be informed.

He or she will be invited to make the next draw, at the same time next week, although organisers understand that some people will have work commitments.

Goole Lottery organisers said they were "very excited" about the new venture and were looking forward to watching the lottery go from strength to strength, and at the same time, build up a long-term sustainable fund to help local good causes and the local economy.

"It's been hard work but well worth the effort," said Michelle Theaker, of Goole Development Trust.

Someone will win £1,000 in each Wednesday's draw.

Proceeds will go into regeneration projects in Goole, in the form of a loan fund and a community fund.

The loan fund will be available to Goole businesses who are unable to access funding through the usual commercial routes. Loans of up to £10,000 will be offered, for a period of up to three years, and a capital interest repayment holiday of up to six months will be available. Loans will be approved by the Goole and District Lottery board of directors, which is made up of representatives from organisations and businesses in Goole.

Individuals and groups will benefit from the community fund through grants, which will be available for things such as a musical instrument for an up and coming musician or football strips for a local team.

The lottery has been set up by the Investing in Goole Society Limited, and the organisers, Goole Development Trust, have obtained a Gambling Commission licence to host the lottery.

Entry is £1 and people enter for a minimum of four weeks. Anyone wanting to enter the lottery needs to set up a standing order or send a cheque or postal order for four weeks, three months, six months or a year. Visit www.gooleanddistrictlottery.org.uk or call free on 0800 8766 880.

Leaflets are also available from Goole Market, Goole Town Council offices, The Courtyard, Goole Rugby Club, Jinks Café, the Waterways Museum, Walthams Accountants, the Moorlands Café, The Gate theatre, Goole Library and the Goole Times offices.

Entrants will be allocated a number and if that number is selected randomly by the lottery computer programme, her or she will win £1,000.
