All aboard the Cooking Bus
Carlton Holy Family School pupils hopped on board the Cooking Bus on Tuesday to learn how to cook healthy, balanced meals.
The massive articulated lorry, which has spent the week at the school, opens out into a purpose-built kitchen/classroom, where qualified food teachers give pupils and adults lessons in cooking.
The cooking activities suit the age of pupils taking part and support the school curriculum. There is also training for the teachers so they can help the pupils cook with confidence.
The Cooking Bus is funded by Yorkshire Forward and run by the Focus on Food Campaign, an organisation which supports the teaching of cooking in schools across Britain.
John Sorsby, Food and Drink Team Manager for Yorkshire Forward, said "Yorkshire Forward aims to support the region's food and drink industry in a variety of ways.
The Focus on Food Cooking Bus not only teaches young people about healthy eating and food hygiene, it also demonstrates the possibilities of food and drink as a career option."
Pupils on the bus cover key aspects of food education, including nutrition, food safety and hygiene and food preparation skills. The core of all the lessons is hands-on cooking.
