The Probation Service is warning people to be on their guard against bogus callers who have been asking people to hand over their money.

The conmen have been calling at residents' homes in Goole asking for cash to aid their 'rehabilitation process' under the Probation Service.

Probation officers say the ruse has happened at least once, when two men in their early twenties targeted a home in Rawcliffe about two weeks ago.

The woman who answered the door turned them away and then rang the police after the men left empty-handed.

Peter Wright, assistant chief officer with the Humberside National Probation Service, said: "We have been alerted to incidents in the Goole area where people are undertaking door-to-door selling, saying that this is supported by the National Probation Service as a means of them raising money 'to keep out of trouble'.

"This activity has nothing to do with National Probation Service Humberside. We never require offenders to undertake door-to-door selling. It's a scam and we want it stopped."

Mr Wright said so far there had only been one incident reported in Goole but there had probably been more which had not been reported.

Adrian Mellor, a senior probation officer based in Goole, said: "People are going around taking our name in vain in an attempt to gain people's trust.

"We want people to be on their guard because we don't want them to become victims of crime."

Anyone approached by people asking for money in this way are asked to call the Goole Probation Office on: 01405 766 194 or Humberside Police on: 0845 60 60 222.
