Cannabis farm raid sees four arrested
CANNABIS plants and related growing equipment have been discovered at a travellers' permanent caravan park in Selby district.
Following a police raid on Friday morning, four residents of the site in Lynwith Lane at Carlton were arrested after officers uncovered evidence of a cannabis 'farm'.
Leading the investigation, Pc Chris Ryan said "a quite large" amount of plants were recovered from the location. A man aged 37 and a woman aged 40, along with a man in his early-20s and a juvenile girl were arrested just before the weekend when eight North Yorkshire officers, accompanied by 18 Ministry of Defence officers, swooped on the site in the south-east of the district.
Pc Ryan said: "We executed three drugs warrants at 9am. Quite an amount of drugs, namely cannabis, were recovered, along with various items of related paraphernalia." He said the alleged offenders were arrested on suspicion of cultivating and possessing cannabis, but a value for the quantity of drugs seized would not be known until the haul had been inspected by specialist officers.
"The operation was conducted by Selby's Safer Neighbourhoods Team with support from York," he explained, adding that the MOD officers were assisting with several operations in the region as part of a joint exercise with North Yorkshire Police.
Pc Ryan said: "Overall it was a success. We found a fairly large amount of drugs and inquiries are ongoing at this stage." The suspects were interviewed on Friday and released on police bail pending the results of the forensic analysis.
RSPCA officers were also on hand as a dog believed to belong to one of the suspects was at the scene.
It is not thought any charges will be pressed in relation to the animal's welfare, however it was taken into the care of the animal charity while the alleged offenders were detained.
The raid was conducted as part of Operation Maximum Impact - launched last week as a joint campaign involving all four police forces in the Yorkshire and Humber region to deal with criminals crossing county boundaries.
According to figures released by North Yorkshire Police at the beginning of this week 622 arrests have been made across the force region since the initiative began on February 1.
