'Take your time and arrive alive' is the heartfelt message from the local fire service.

In response to the recent spate of bad weather, Humberside Fire and Rescue has given the following advice.

In snow, sleet and high winds, the chances of being involved in a road accident increases considerably.

"Road conditions change rapidly during the winter months and because of this we ALL need to take a little more time and take a lot more notice," a spokesperson said.

They have this advice for pedestrians and cyclists:

"Bad weather almost always affects visibility on the roads not only for drivers but often pedestrians and cyclists too.

"We all understand how much more difficult it is to see in the dark and people must consider this even more if it is snowing when visibility is worsened."

Drivers

"Take a few more minutes to clear the windows of your vehicles. Remember you are driving a road vehicle and not a ship; you should clean all of the window and not just a small round porthole.

'Be patient and let the heater warm up and demist the car before setting off on your journey - a few minutes could save a life.

"Make sure that you wiper blades are in good condition and, if not, change them.

"Lights! How often do we see cars driving in the rain, snow, fog and mist without lights and just with sidelamps showing? Your lights are there not only so that you can see where you're going but also so that others can see you – put your headlamps on.

"A lot of modern cars have a temperature readout on the dashboard. It is there to help you to understand that you might be driving in freezing conditions, so use it: look at it and take in the information.

"Look and listen to the weather forecast and drive, not according to what you think you see, but to what could be happening around the corner.

"Consider the needs of other road users and give them the space that they might need should anything go wrong.

"Take your time and arrive alive!"
