A campaign has been launched to prevent potential traffic accidents in Gilberdyke.

Residents of Westbrook Road and Westbrook Crescent have signed a petition calling for the roads to be made into a cul-de-sac to stop traffic using it as a thoroughfare.

A letter to Gilberdyke Parish Council said: "During the recent flooding experienced in Westbrook Road and Westbrook Crescent, 'road closed' signs were erected, which meant that the only traffic using Westbrook Road/Westbrook Crescent were the residents themselves. Due to and during this action, the roadway was extremely quiet and safe.

"Therefore, it soon became apparent that vehicle-users continually access this roadway as a cut-through from Bellasize to Station Road (in some cases at excessive speeds)."

The letter said it was becoming unsafe for everyone, and especially for children and the elderly.

"It is very busy during school days, morning, noon and night as vehicles users again use this access as a cut through."

Gilberdyke Parish Council forwarded the petition to the East Riding, whose Environment and Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee considered it last Wednesday.

They agreed that it should be looked at in conjunction with the school travel plan, and the parish council and ward councillors should be involved with its development.
