Members of the public are being invited to attend a meeting next month that aims to reduce anti-social behaviour in Snaith.

The public meeting has been arranged by Snaith and Cowick Town Council and will take place at The Old Grammar School on Monday, February 4 at 7pm.

It will provide an opportunity for residents to discuss their feelings about acts of anti-social behaviour that have occurred in Snaith and Cowick.

Humberside Police has been informed about the meeting, but a representative has not been invited to attend. In a letter read out to members of Snaith and Cowick Town Council this week, inspector Mick Bower expressed his surprise at the move.

He said: "I am surprised that your Council has chosen not to seek police attendance but acknowledge their prerogative not to do so. I say surprised, for I feel that it would be an opportunity for those local residents who attend to raise issues or concerns with local officers."

But Snaith and Cowick Town councillor Richard Bridge said at Monday's council meeting: "The aim of the meeting is to gather information, primarily. We need to be non-confrontational initially, we want to see what the depth of feeling is, rather than have a question and answer session with the police there and then.

"Then, maybe we could arrange a further meeting with police."

Town councillors are also keen to stress to residents that it is important that all acts of anti-social behaviour are reported to police.

Cllr Bridge added: "If people don't report it, it doesn't go into the police statistics and then they don't think that there is a problem in the area."

To report any anti-social behaviour in Snaith and Cowick, contact Humberside Police on 0845 6060222.
