Carlton horse rescue centre enjoys success
Bank End Equine Rescue in Carlton has gone from strength to strength since it began rehoming horses back in November.
The centre was set up to save the lives of horses that would otherwise go to the 'meat man' by outbidding them at auctions and bringing them back to the centre for rehabilitation.
Since they set up, Toni Veitch and business partner Brian Streeton have re-homed 17 horses and ponies, both in England and France.
Toni and Brian are helped by their treasurer and secretary, Bruce and Suzi Newlands, and also local companies who donate feed, such as Pets Pad in Rawcliffe and L&L Equestrian in Carlton.
Toni said: "Both Graham from Pets Ped and Andy Leek and his partner Emma are very supportive of us. Rosemary and John Cooper of Mill Farm Farm Shop at Cowick give us their unsaleable fruit and veg daily.
"Our biggest success story has to be Chantelle, who is a lovely 14.2hh Anglo Arab we believe to be anywhere between 19 and 22 years old. She was not given the nutrition she needed, however, and was put in foal year after year.
"We rescued her from the clutches of the meat man in November and placed her in foster care, where she is going from strength to strength and gaining weight.
"Her foster mum Andrea is wonderful and extremely diligent and has nursed her back to health. She will stay with Andrea for the rest of her days."
Bank End Equine Rescue now has a membership of 80 people and is currently awaiting its 'Not for Profit' status with Companies House. Although the centre doesn't currently have any horses ready for re-homing, these will be posted on their website, www.bankendequinerescue.com, when they become available.
The centre always welcome public donations and these can be made via PayPal or personally to the centre. Anyone wanting to make donations can contact Toni at bankendstables @tiscali.co.uk or by visiting the website at www.bankendequine rescue.com.
Toni said: "Any donations of feed or other horsey paraphernalia will always be welcome, anything from old tack to old blankets come in handy, even garden forks, wheelbarrows etc for mucking out.
"Sponsorship from any interested feed merchants or saddlers would be hugely appreciated. We are going to be moving to new premises in the spring, so if any builders' merchants would like to help us out with materials for new stables and fencing I will love them for life!"
A pub quiz fundraiser will be held at The Huntsman in Drax on Saturday night at 7.30pm in aid of the centre.
