Ban for crash driver
A local woman has been banned from driving for more than a year after she was this week pleaded guilty of causing a crash near Welham Bridge by driving carelessly.
Annette Compton (41), of Chapel Garth in Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, pleaded guilty to careless and inconsiderate driving when she appeared before Goole Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Richard Thompson told the court that it was shortly after midday on June 25, 2007, the day that severe downpours hit the region, when the incident occurred.
Mr Thompson said that prior to the crash, a witness was driving his car along the A614 at a steady speed of between 30 and 40mph, along with other drivers, because of the poor weather conditions.
He saw a Jaguar X-type, driven by Mrs Compton, approaching from behind at some speed. He was 'shocked' when she overtook him and remained on the wrong side of the road as she tried to overtake a second car.
The witness saw that a bend was approaching, and saw a Renault Scenic car approaching.
Mr Compton braked harshly and tried to return to her correct side of the road, but she spun out of control, spinning anti-clockwise and then clockwise before careering into the path of the oncoming Renault.
Mrs Compton suffered a broken sternum as a result of the smash, the driver of the Renault Scenic suffered a broken collar-bone, and his front-seat passenger had facial injuries. His six-year-old daughter in the back seat fractured her right shoulder.
Mr Thompson told the court: "The defendant was driving far too fast for the road conditions."
He added that Mrs Compton said she had no recollection of the accident, but remembered earlier receiving a call from her daughter to say that her school was being closed for the day because of flooding.
In her defence, Mrs Compton emotionally told the court: "I have been affected by what happened, and I regret what happened.
"I still remember nothing from leaving home."
In considering the case, magistrates told Mrs Compton: "This is a very serious case of dangerous driving."
She was banned from driving for 15 months, and ordered to pay a fine of £250. Mrs Compton was also ordered to pay £60 towards court costs and a compulsory victim surcharge of £15.
