Wall crash driver ban
A Gilberdyke man was disqualified from driving for a year when a court heard how he crashed his car into a wall following a drinking session the night before.
Stewart Smart (27), of Oaklands, pleaded guilty to driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit when he appeared before Goole Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Prosecuting, Richard Thompson told the court that at around 5am on Monday, January 21, police on duty in Howden spotted a silver Peugeot that had crashed into a wall at the local fire station.
They saw Mr Smart standing nearby.
Mr Smart told police that he was on his way to work in Selby.
Police suspected him of being over the prescribed alcohol limit for driving and Mr Smart admitted that he had drunk around three double vodkas and lemonade the previous evening.
When asked to provide a breath test, Mr Smart was found to have 69mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit for a driver is 35mcg.
In a statement read out to the court in his defence, Mr Smart told of how he was "ashamed and disgusted" with himself for the "stupid mistake" he had made.
His statement said: "I am guilty and truly sorry."
Magistrates banned Mr Smart from driving for 12 months, and fined him £250. He was also ordered to pay £43 in court costs and a compulsory victim surcharge of £15.
