A Goole resident has this week spoken out about his 'disgust' and 'disappointment' at feeling compelled to seek private care after being shipped around 'like cattle' at Goole Hospital's Eye Clinic.

Eric Garrad (76) has been troubled by excessive watering of the eyes for a number of years. After complaining to his GP last year he was referred to a consultant at Goole Hospital's Eye Clinic in July 2007.

The consultant confirmed that Mr Garrad's tear ducts were blocked and he was told that two tests needed to take place before further action could be taken. Attending an appointment for a second test earlier this month, Mr Garrad was appalled when he was given the same standard eye test as he underwent in July, before being returned to the waiting area shortly before 10.30am to wait... and wait.

Mr Garrad said: "By 11.30am I had been sitting there with several other patients awaiting treatments, when I had to leave to keep another appointment. This was of the kind where both parties are available at the appointed time." Mr Garrad was so annoyed by the treatment he has received that he now feels compelled to seek private care. He added: "I very much regret that my only remaining option is to now go private in the hope of receiving some sort of adequate treatment, but I look forward to the day when NHS patients will be treated as human beings and not shipped from one crowded waiting area to another like cattle."

* A spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "We have received a complaint from this gentleman and are currently looking into the issues raised in his letter.

"We will reply to the complainant once we have fully investigated his concerns. Delays are sometimes unavoidable due to clinical priorities. We always endeavour to keep these to a minimum."
