Was it an alien? Was it a plane? No - it was Drax power station.

Speculation that the Goole area had had a visitor from outer space was rife last Thursday morning after an incident in the early hours of the morning.

Several people contacted the Goole Times office to say that they had been woken up at around 3am by lights and a strange droning noise.

One reader from Goole, who asked not to be named, described the noise as 'a loud noise like Concorde taking off'.

"It sounded like something mechanical. It went on for about 20 minutes," she said.

"Some people saw lights - it's like nothing I've heard before. It woke lots of people up."

People from Goole, Howden and many of the surrounding villages, including Barlow, Rawcliffe and Eastrington, reported hearing the noise.

Mrs G. Lyons, of Lincoln, who was staying with friends in Howden, said: "At 3.30am Thursday morning I heard what I thought was planes flying low but when I looked outside I could not see anything.

"The noise went on for 15 to 20 minutes and then faded." However, there proved to be a logical and rather less exciting explanation than a UFO.

A spokesperson for Drax Power Station said a safety valve had been triggered.

"Following an investigation, it was revealed that a fault on one of two control systems on the low-pressure side of the system on one of the units at Drax Power Station caused the low-pressure side of the system to fail safe. As a result, a safety valve was opened," she said.

She apologised for any inconvenience caused to residents.
