Town is set for NHS dentist
An NHS dentist could soon become a permanent fixture in Snaith, it was announced this week.
The positive announcement was made following a meeting last Friday between Goole MP Ian Cawsey and the East Yorkshire Primary Care Trust (PCT).
The Trust has said that additional funds have been allocated to them for NHS dentistry and they have money left over from last year, as not all of their allocation was spent.
The Trust will be tendering for interested dentists to supply 10,000 treatments a year for the area, and that this tendering process will take place over the next few months.
Currently, a mobile NHS dental service operates in Snaith from the Marshes Medical Centre, and its popularity has grown since it began in April, 2007.
Mr Cawsey said this week: "Obviously this is good new for the area. Since Snaith's dentist took the decision to drop NHS work, it has been a battle to get NHS dentist services to those who need them.
"The introduction of the mobile dentist unit was a help, certainly for those with limited mobility but I have always continued to argue for a more comprehensive service for a growing part of our area.
"I should say that at all times I have had excellent support from Snaith and Cowick Town Council, for which I am very grateful and this has been crucial in getting to this point.
"It has taken several meetings with the PCT and I understand the pressures they are under as well.
"But this is a real step forward and alongside their announcement that they are also looking to increase the amount of NHS dentistry in Goole shows the strength of our argument has been recognised.
"There will be more to do but this is a welcome announcement, which will be well received by people across the area."
Speaking at Monday's meeting of Snaith and Cowick Town Council, Cllr Richard Bridge told the meeting: "We should thank Ian Cawsey for his efforts."
