Schools triumph in league tables
Schools in the Goole Times area had something to smile about when the GCSE league tables were published last week.
Vermuyden came top of the East Riding table for adding value to their students' achievements by the end of key stage four.
They scored 1,023.5 points in a section known as 'contextual value added'. "It is a particularly pleasing achievement for a school because it takes into account the starting point for pupils in year seven and then measures how much progress each pupil has made over their five years at the end of year 11," a school spokesperson explained.
Reaching 1,000 points means that students have achieved as expected in school; anything more means they have done better than their starting point suggested they would do.
Vermuyden were just 1.5 points away from being in the top five per cent nationally for adding value.
"Staff and students put their success down to hard work but more importantly, to a totally personalised approach to the curriculum," the spokeperson said.
"It is a recipe for success that has seen the school improve its results dramatically over the years."
Head teacher Danuta Tomasz said coming top of the league tables was the "icing on the cake".
Meanwhile, Snaith was praised for beating what the East Riding council described as a "challenging" target in terms of GCSE results.
They also beat the value added benchmark, with 1,007.2 points, and last year's GCSE results showed an improvement of eight per cent.
Head teacher Jean Pickerell said: "We're really pleased with the results."
Howden School were 0.2 points away from the 1,000 point mark, with 999.8 points; 38 per cent of their students achieved five or more GCSEs at A* to C.
Commenting on the results for the East Riding as a whole, the council's portfolio holder for children, young people and schools, Cllr Penny Peacock, said: "This has been a time of real improvement for young people with an improvement of 13 per cent in four years and we have moved securely into top 25 per cent performance, making us 32nd out of 150 authorities nationally."
