Police have issued a warning after a resident's wallet was taken from his trouser pocket.

The incident took place at a property on Wroots Avenue, Old Goole, around 1.20pm on Monday. A man went to the property and claimed he had lived in the street a few years earlier.

He then went inside the house and took a wallet from the victim's trouser pocket, before running off.

He was aged between 25 and 29 years old, of slim build and around 5ft 4in tall. His hair was black and straight and he was wearing a shirt with black and blue stripes, jeans and possibly a boiler suit.

Pc Steve Norfolk, of Humberside Police, said: "We are asking people to be extra careful when strangers call at their homes.

"It is important we trace this suspect but it is equally important that we advise the community to keep an eye on elderly relatives and neighbours and impress on them the importance of denying access to strangers."

Humberside Police are offering the following advice to help residents avoid falling victim to crime:

• Do not invite callers into the home unless you are certain they are genuine and feel comfortable about them being in the house.

• Chains on a door can be a good device as the person calling will not be able to easily gain access to the house or see inside the property.

• If you unsure about a caller contact the police.

Officers are also encouraging members of the public with elderly friends of relatives to make sure they are aware of this advice.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact police on 0845 6060 222, quoting log 238 of January 14 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
