The success of the locally-organised 'Christmas fit for Heroes' appeal to send gift parcels to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan has been highlighted by a letter sent from a serviceman to appeal organisers Kerry amd Darren Smith, of Swinefleet.

The letter, from WO2 P.A. Swallow, serving with 4 Regiment of the Royal Artillery, reads:

Dear Kerry and Darren,

I'm writing to thank you for the parcel full of goodies that me and my soldiers received on Christmas Day. Father Smith received a large number of parcels from well-wishers like yourselves and did a wonderful job of getting them out to the soldiers on the front line in very difficult circumstances (no doubt he had some divine assistance).

Personally, I would like to thank you and the people of Goole and surrounding area for the treats we received. It was heart-warming for us to receive your parcel and the kind words in your letter. A few words of support from those at home go a long way to making us all feel valued out here.

We all understand that what we do is not popular with all the folks back home, so to receive such kind support is very much appreciated. I have myself been a soldier for 22 years now, have served in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Bosnia, the Falklands and also here in Afghanistan. I'm currently stationed in Germany with my wife and 11-year-old son.

As you can imagine, I have been around a bit! This has made me understand how important it is to our boys and girls that those at home care about them. Your kind gesture and support from yourselves and the people of Goole will not be forgotten and I'm sure that for many of us it will, if anything, strengthen our resolve to make a difference to the people of Afghanistan. Once again, many thanks.

P. A. Swallow, WO2, RQMS, 4 Regt RA
