Oddfellows make lifeboat donation
The Goole branch of the Oddfellows handed over £1,000 to the Spurn lifeboat crew recently.
Members travelled to Grimsby to meet them, and branch chairperson Rita Turner handed over the cheque. The money was raised through activities such as quizzes, raffles, sponsorship and donations from members who had helped them raise the money.
A spokesperson for the Oddfellows said of the event: "The highlight was undoubtedly the opportunity to board the lifeboat for a trial run into the shipping lanes of the Humber.
"After an informal chat at the Grimbsy Yacht Club with these very modest men, they went back to sea and we came back to Goole much more aware of the demands of the lifeboat service.
"Before coming across to us, the boat had rescued a stranded fishing crew at 1am. Duties consist of being on duty for eight days, followed by two days at rest."
The Spurn lifeboat is the only full-time lifeboat in the country and other than the mechanic, the crew consists wholly of ex-fishermen. They all live on Spurn Point and, for obvious reasons, there has to be harmony at all times.
The visit was organised by Peter Needham, secretary of the Goole Oddfellows.
The Oddfellows raise money for a number of charities, and provide a variety of welfare services for its members.
