A restaurant is Goole is calling on diners to help them help the homeless and starving in Bangladesh.

Lazeez, the Indian restaurant on Government Street, is holding a charity dinner on January 20.

Fifty per cent of the proceeds will go to the Bangladesh Cyclone Appeal, which was set up after Cyclone Sidr tore through the country in November last year.

The Mayor of Goole, Cllr Jean Kitchen, has lent her support to the event.

"Thinking back to June of this year - many areas of the East Riding were under floodwater and many residents are still living in caravans and have not had a pleasant Christmas," she said.

"Bangladesh, during the same period, suffered severe floods and landslides, but it did not end there.

"On November 15, Cyclone Sidr struck the southern area of Bangladesh. Over 3,200 people died and over 900 are still missing. It is estimated that over 773,000 homes were destroyed and millions of people are still homeless.

'Diseases flourish in these conditions, and medicines are still urgently required, as well as some sort of basic shelter for the millions in need.

'Food is also a major requisite as the rice harvest has been lost and another of their important money earners, shrimp fishing, was destroyed.

"It is now estimated that 8.9 million people have been affected and 2.6 million are still in need of life-saving assistance.'

Last year, Lazeez donated £800 to the mayor's charities - Artsaway/Castaway and Goole in Bloom - and Cllr Kitchen is calling on people to help the restaurant support their friends and relatives.

The meal costs £11.95, which includes three courses and tea and coffee. There are two sittings - at 5.30pm and 8.30pm - and booking is essential.

Lazeez does not serve alcohol but diners are welcome to take along their own.
