A couple in Rawcliffe celebrated a new year and a new arrival last week.

Kirsty Leigh gave birth to Grace Emma June Cook on January 2 at Goole and District Hospital. She is Kirsty's first child, and weighed six pounds and eleven and a half ounces.

Grace was actually due on December 24, and Kirsty said: "Once Christmas Day was over, I was ready.

"It's been a bit of a funny Christmas!" added her partner, Paul Cook.

Mother, baby and father are now back at their Bell Lane home and doing well.

The couple described the treatment they received at Goole's midwifery suite as "breathtaking", but are concerned it is not being used to its full potential.

When Kirsty first became pregnant she was given the choice of giving birth in Goole or at Scunthorpe hospital, but was told the Goole service might not be available.

Paul said: "With my other half being a Goole girl originally, when we were asked where we wanted to have the baby, we said Goole. You're looking at a 40-minute trip to get to Scunthorpe. They told me it depends on when you go into labour."

It was only when Kirsty went into labour, at midnight, that she knew she would be able to give birth in Goole.

"It was so relaxed - it was like a home from home," said Kirsty. "You can be comfortable because you've got everything there. I gave birth at 7.34am, and they said to me: 'Relax, take your time. You don't have to go straightaway'."

Paul added: "The midwives were 110 per cent and the facilities were wonderful. There was a kitchen, a bedroom with a double pine bed, drawers, a CD player, a small lounge area and tea and coffee facilities.

"It was amazing. I can't stress enough how important it is for someone like Kirsty, who was having her first baby, to have such a relaxing time of it, even though it's one of the most stressful things women go through.

"But it's not being used to its full potential. It's only open at certain times. Unless you have your baby between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, you've had it. The facility is so nice - it's such a shame."

Paul says he feels so strongly about the issue that he would like to set up an action group. Anyone who would like to get involved can email him at paul.cook7@virgin.net

A spokesperson for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospital said that the facility was essentially available on an 'as needs be' basis. He also stressed that being admitted to Goole depended on the woman's condition and circumstances.
