Councillors express concern over primary school parking
The parking situation outside Snaith Primary School is an accident waiting to happen, according to town councillors.
The matter was raised at last Monday's meeting, when councillors reported cars being parked in the drop-off layby, and lining both sides of the street.
After visiting Bourn Mill Balk Road, Cllr Greta Laughton said: "Quite how there wasn't a serious accident, I don't know. There were a lot of frayed tempers."
Councillors also reported buses and cars having trouble getting along the road.
"I want to know from the school how far the school have got with it," said Cllr Laughton.
The council agreed to write to the school, asking whether there could be a human presence to deter parents from parking in the drop-off layby, or a walking bus could be introduced.
Kate Rowley, head teacher at Snaith Primary School, said the school was very much aware of the problem and have been taking steps to tackle it.
"Most of the points mentioned by the council we've addressed," she said. "We've mentioned it in newsletters and sent out individual letters to parents, and we've involved the local police."
A sheltered area has been created for parents coming to collect their children, and Ms Rowley said she had been outside recently to deter parents from parking in the layby.
Walking to school is also being promoted and a travel plan, which addresses the parking issues, was submitted to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council earlier this year.
"We're very, very concerned about the safety of the children," said Ms Rowley.
"It's about the community working together to make it safe."
