Planning bosses have refused a planning application to convert an outbuilding to a day nursery at The Knoll on Boothferry Road, Knedlington.

The application was previously referred to the November 27 Western Area Planning Sub-committee, at which members decided to defer a decision for a site visit, and was considered again on Tuesday.

It was decided that the amount of traffic associated with the day nursery would exceed that of the existing residential use and therefore present a risk to highway safety.

Although the site has its advantages, such as no neighbours and plenty of space, the distance from the town centre would not allow parents and guardians the option of walking their children to and from the nursery.

It was felt that such services should be sited within the development limits of Howden, and not on the outskirts in open countryside. This would then allow visitors the opportunity to travel there by means other than a private vehicle.
