Double delight
Two local causes have been given early Christmas present totalling nearly £40,000.
Gilberdyke Methodist Church Community Project has received £26,740 and Blacktoft Sands Nature Reserve, £10,175.
The money is from the the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group Ltd, distributed by WREN, and is for projects which will improve community life.
Barbara Morris, from the Gilberdyke, said: "We were very, very pleased to get the grant from WREN and for all the support from the community.
"It was a very generous grant."
The money will go towards a complete refurbishment of the church building, including new heating, lighting and disabled facilities.
"People have been praying for us and supporting our fundraising events," she added.
The group are still fundraising - see our picture 19-10-17 GT) of their autumn fair on page 12 - and have a target of £250,000.
Christmas come early at Reserve
At Blacktoft Sands, visitors will soon have even better access to the wildlife.
David Hirst, regional information officer at the RSPB, said: "We are delighted to have got this early Christmas present.
"The money will be used to develop the 'people side' of the reserve," he said.
There will be more and new information about the wildlife and the importance of Blacktoft Sands in the context of Humber Estuary.
"We want it to be a place people can access," he said.
Staff are also looking into the possibility of installing CCTV around the reed beds, so that the birds can be seen more easily.
More details of both projects will be released over the next few months.
