Humberside Police this week launched a high-visibility operation in Goole in a bid to crack down on pick-pocketing, shop theft and anti-social behaviour in the run up to Christmas.

Operation Snowman began in Goole on Monday and runs until Sunday, December 23. High-visibility patrols will be out in the area around Pasture Road, Wesley Square and the shopping areas of Boothferry Road in an effort to reduce the number of shop thefts and pick-pockets, and to reassure the public.

Although pick-pocketing is fairly rare, busy shopping centres give thieves an opportunity to steal from shoppers. They often deliberately knock or bump into a victim to distract them and then steal a wallet or purse from a pocket or bag.

Similar operations are currently running across the Humberside Police division - Operation Panto in Bridlington and Operation Scrooge in Beverley, Hornsea and Driffield.

"Please look after your purse and wallet, don't let pick-pockets spoil your Christmas," said Paul Green of East Riding Safe Communities.

"If someone knocks or bumps into you, check that your purse hasn't been taken from your bag or pocket and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Never let your handbag out of sight and don't leave your bag, purse or wallet on a shopping basket, table or shop counter.

"Remember, it can happen very quickly and you may not notice."
