Crowds flock to late-night event
Christmas came early to Howden last week when the crowds turned out to enjoy late-night festive shopping.
All the town's shops were open late on Thursday, December 13, and many offered drinks and nibbles to those who braved the cold. Santa Claus even made an appearance at the Shire Hall.
Each year, Howden Civic Society, in collaboration with Howden Town Council, organises a Christmas shop window competition to encourage shops and offices to dress their windows with a Christmas theme.
This year the theme was 'A Christmas Carol', and 12 shops, offices and cafes entered the competition. On Thursday evening, Screetons Estate Agents was judged the winner, with Heptonstalls Solicitors in second place and both Blue Sky and Howden Pet Empawrium in joint third place.
"This has been our best ever year in the competition," said Roger Watkins, chairman of Howden Civic Society.
'I thank the businesses taking part and I believe the people of Howden will support them even more in the future."
Last week's event also saw celebrations at Parkins Butchers in Market Place. The butchers have bought four champion sheep from Peter Farmery, who farms locally at Sycamore House, Sandholme. The sheep were winners of the Selby Christmas Show, and were bought by Parkins Butchers at a record price of £128 each.
