A leading food and grocery supply chain with a site in Goole has announced that it is merging with another leading supplier next year to create a supply chain platform for food and drink manufacturers across the UK with a starting turnover of £125 million.

Baylis Logistics, which has a site off New Potter Grange Road, is to merge into a new company with Culina Logistics from January 1, 2008, to become known as Culina Logistics Ltd.

Established in 1939, Baylis stores and distributes products for more than 60 customers, including Ferrero, Discovery Foods and General Mills UK.

The new company will be part-owned by Luxembourg-based TML Invest - the investment arm of Theo Muller, owner of the Muller Dairy Group.

"Our aim is to be the UK's leading food and drink logistics specialist," said Thomas Van Mourik, CEO of the new company.

"Our enhanced service offering will include a cross-fertilisation of ideas, experience and best practice from across the original Baylis and Culina operations. We'll be working even closer with our customers on their strategic requirements and using the greater strengths of the new business to deliver more comprehensive supply chain solutions."

Group operations director Rien Brakel said that the new business will employ 1,300 people. It will operate from nine sites, and have a vehicle fleet of 250 and 550 trailers.

Mr Van Mourik added: "The transition from two organisations to one will be gradual and smooth.

"We have the capacity, flexibility, resources and financial clout to deliver unbeatable supply chain solutions to the food and drink industry. That's what we intend to do."
