Illegal dumpers beware
Goole area residents could risk finding a nasty surprise from the law in their Christmas stockings this year if they fail to dispose of festive waste properly.
Over the Christmas period, households across the East Riding are expected to produce around 20 per cent more waste than usual. In previous years this has resulted in alleyways and ten-foots around Goole being used for fly-tipping of this extra waste.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) is warning that a court appearance could be on the cards who do not dispose of their waste properly.
The waste duty of care law says people must take all reasonable steps to ensure their waste is kept safe, and this means residents should keep it on their property inside a bin until it can be disposed of appropriately.
"If waste is given to someone else for disposal, the resident must be sure they are authorised to take it and can transport, recycle and dispose of it safely," said Richard Stork, streetscene enforcement officer for ERYC.
"Householders should be aware they may be approached by unregistered waste carriers at this time of year. Many unregistered waste carriers transport waste illegally and also dispose of it illegally by fly-tipping.
"Residents who allow unlicensed people to dispose of their waste are breaking the waste duty of care law and could be prosecuted. This charge can lead to an unlimited fine."
In an effort to tackle the Christmas waste problem, Goole Neighbourhood Action Team (NAT) would like to remind residents of their duty of care in disposing of waste.
Most kinds of household waste can be recycled at the household waste recycling site (HWRS) in Airmyn. This includes cardboard, which makes up a large percentage of waste created by Christmas.
The Airmyn HWRS is open seven days a week, from 10am until 6pm. It will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
