A pensioner from Gilberdyke had to be cut free after being pinned between a hedge and a car in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The pensioner, a 65-year-old man, suffered serious leg injuries after being hit by a black BMW on Clementhorpe Road at 12.05am on Saturday.

It is understood the man was trapped against the hedge by the car and had to be freed by firefighters using saws. He was given oxygen before being taken to Hull Royal Infirmary by ambulance.

The BMW was travelling towards the junction with Bellasize Park when the accident happened.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed alcohol limit.

He has since been released on police bail pending further inquiries and is due to report back later this month.

Humberside Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are asking anyone who saw the accident or the car being driven prior to it to contact them on 0845 6060 222, quoting log number 6 of December 15.
