Driver faces jail
A young man from Thorne faces a custodial sentence this week after being caught behind the wheel of a car whilst disqualified from driving and over the prescribed alcohol limit.
Ross White (21), of Millcroft Close in Thorne, appeared before Goole Magistrates' Court to face sentencing on Tuesday morning after previously pleading guilty to driving whilst disqualified, driving whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit and driving without insurance.
Prosecutor Julie Laverack Glanville told the court that Mr White was disqualified from driving for 20 months in August this year. On November 4 he was caught behind the wheel of a Vauxhall Corsa after a night out in Goole.
In the early hours of November 4, shortly before 3.30am, police received reports from the town's CCTV operator of a single-vehicle accident in Pasture Road. There they found Mr White, who smelled strongly of alcohol and was being kept at the scene by a member of the public.
CCTV footage showed Mr White travelling along Boothferry Road at around 3.15am, when he was seen to perform a hand-brake turn and reverse into Pasture Road, before driving into First Avenue.
A few moments later, at the junction of Pasture Road and Boothferry Road, Mr White was seen to get out of the car, before getting in again and colliding with a lamp post.
The court heard that Mr White had been out drinking in Goole earlier that evening, and did not remember much of the night, apart from having an argument with a doorman at the town's Vision night club.
Defending, Amanda Holmes told the court that Mr White was already in the process of completing a court order, and was doing well.
She said: "Mr White and his girlfriend were going out drinking in Goole town centre that evening. They had parked their car at a friend's house and got a taxi into the town centre. They did not intend to drive back."
Miss Holmes said that after an argument with the doorman at Vision night club, Mr White did not remember any more. He believed his drink might have been spiked because it tasted 'funny'.
Miss Holmes added: "He cannot explain why he was driving the car, but accepts that it was he who was driving it.
"Alcohol keeps getting him into trouble, and he wants alcohol counselling."
Magistrates decided to revoke a community order issued to Mr White on August 7. Magistrates told him: "Because of the seriousness of the offence, and the fact that it is a repeat of this offence, we feel that we should be deciding that custody should be the suitable option."
Magistrates issued Mr White with a 12-month suspended sentence, to include two custodial sentences of four-months each that will run concurrently with one another. The suspended sentence also included a 12-month supervision order.
For driving whilst disqualified and driving over the prescribed alcohol limit, Mr White was disqualified from driving for three years, and was ordered to pay £55 towards court costs. For driving without insurance he had his driving licence endorsed.
