Hagg Lane Green Conservation Project in Hemingbrough has won the Village Ventures competition from Yorkshire Rural Community Council.

The annual Villages Ventures competition has been running for more than ten years and aims to recognise and promote voluntary projects in rural areas which benefit the local community.

Any group that carried out voluntary projects for the benefit of the local community in the districts of Ryedale, Scarborough, Selby and rural York was eligible to enter.

Hagg Lane Green Conservation project won the first prize for its innovation and fine example of community partnership in protecting and enhancing the site.

The management group for the project is made up of parish councillors and volunteers from the community and supported by Hemingbrough Primary School, local groups, clubs, organisations and associations. They have provided an enhanced natural heritage of the site, protection for wildlife, particularly the great crested newt which is a threatened species, and created an informal recreational and educational facility for the residents of Hemingbrough.

Second place went to Lockton and Levisham Playing Field Association, with Hutton le Hole Parish Council being highly commended.

Sally Rawlings, chief executive of YRCC, said: "It is fantastic to see so many people carrying out voluntary work for the benefit of their local communities. I am delighted that YRCC can play a part in helping to ensure that this good work is given the recognition it deserves."
