Trinity Academy in Thorne has reached a new goal for its dedication to football after securing a prestigious FA Charter Standard for Schools award.

The academy had to demonstrate its commitment to the sport with the amount of after-school provision in football for boys and girls of all ages and abilities and its involvement in local and national schools competitions.

The award was presented to the Academy by Trevor Todd, director of the Doncaster and Knottingley Development Centre for Leeds United FC, on behalf of the West Riding County FA.

Mr Todd said: "It's a great standard to have and recognises how the Academy has promoted football within the school."

"The bigger the school, the harder it is to achieve the standard because of the number of teams you have to establish. It really is a very good achievement."

Around 80 youngsters from years seven to 10 attend after-school training on Mondays and Tuesdays, with many competing in mid-week fixtures. There is also separate training for older students.

"The students are very lucky to have in Mr Brew, their principal, someone who is very keen on football - even if he does support Everton. He often joins in our games after school," added Mr Todd.

As well as Leeds' development centre director, Mr Todd is Academy scouts co-ordinator for LUFC. Fourteen boys from Trinity have been selected for the development centre, while goalkeeper Thomas Clarke has taken a step further into the LUFC Academy shadow squad.

Mr Todd added: "As a ratio, 14 boys from one school is high and I think that's probably due in part to the encouragement and opportunities they get to play at the Academy. The school teams are also doing remarkably well."

Other boys from Trinity have been selected for football centres of excellence at Hull City, Doncaster Rovers, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United.

Academy Principal Mr Brew added: "We are delighted to have been awarded the FA Charter Standard. It recognises both the enthusiasm of our students and the commitment of our PE staff and external coaches like Mr Todd who give their time to bring on our talented young players."
