Firefighters have been out and about to drive home the message about road safety.

As part of a campaign with the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and other partners, Humberside Fire and Rescue have been delivering the message: "Speed: cut it out, before we have to cut you out."

Lee Caswell, road safety officer for the fire and rescue service, said: "We attend around eight times as many road collisions as we do rescues from burning buildings.

"Inappropriate speed is a serious problem, especially on rural roads, and we need motorists to focus on the probable consequences."

Every year more than 3,000 people lose their lives on UK roads, with almost 30,000 seriously injured.

Although the last decade has seen a substantial fall in the number injured on East Riding roads, there are still likely to be more than 200 people killed or seriously injured in the area this year.

Partners acting through Safer Roads Humber are making considerable efforts to keep the pressure on to cut injuries still further.

A major programme of road safety schemes has been proposed for Goole, along with new school safety zones and additional safety camera sites on the worst routes.

Over the next few weeks there will be extra police patrols on the routes with the greatest casualty problems, including the A1079, A165, A164, A1033 and A614.

There will be additional speed enforcement and a series of roadside checks to look at vehicle safety, including tyre condition.
